The Smugglers Walk

Monday at 6 pm: walk No 31

Suitable for children (aged 5-10 ideally) - must be accompanied by adults. Four children per adult.

A fun, atmospheric walk (2.8 miles) for children through ancient smuggler territory at evening time with some surprising and entertaining adventures along the way. Perhaps meet some of the mysterious rogues as they wrestle a casket of booty from the seashore, maybe escape from the King's customs men as they struggle to recapture the fancy goods that have washed up ashore and perhaps enjoy a secret rendezvous with the smugglers who have an ingenious plan to evade arrest. Who knows, maybe even come away with some smugglers' gold yourselves.

Please enter your children into the spirit of the walk by dressing them up as smugglers (or pirates) with painted faces, bandanas or hats. Skull and crossbones eyepatches we have! It would be helpful to provide one small rucksack or bag for each party with a drink and, if possible, a torch, which will greatly add to the atmosphere. Stout shoes or trainers are the idea footwear but apart from two gentle hills the route is mainly flat.

The adventures are designed to be amusing and exciting. There may be bangs. But nothing too loud.

The adventures come to a rousing finale at the Rising Sun Pub in Kingsdown where there will be a live music singsong and the opportunity for refreshments for about an hour at the end of the walk. The children's menu is available at £5 per head and includes: Scampi or Cheese and Tomato Pizza or Cheeseburger or Pork Sausages all with chips, beans or peas. We will be taking orders for food at the start of the walk to speed up delivery for you.

For those who would like to finish earlier, it is a 20 minute walk along the seafront (a good tracked cycle/walking track) to the Granville Road car park.

Geocaching Trail

Self-guided walk along the cliffs

No caches have been hidden near the cliff edge or inside any of the buildings on the route. The first consideration has been the safety of cachers and their families.

If you find all 25 caches you will qualify for a Harvey j souvenir for your profile.

Please bring a pen for all caches. Tools for probing and extracting will be required for some of the caches.

This route has been designed to start from Capel le Ferne because the ascent is less strenuous in this direction. The clues for the multi caches are based on the same direction. The caches are hidden along a five mile stretch of the cliff top footpath to Dover, often passing through public access land.

You will see many reminders of past wartime activity. The entire area is shrouded in centuries of history. You will also pass over Samphire Hoe, reclaimed land created from the spoil removed during the drilling of the Channel Tunnel.

This is the start of a breathtaking linear 6 mile walk to Dover across the legendary White Cliffs. On a clear day you can see across the English Channel to France. Sadly, we can't promise you any blue birds over the White Cliffs of Dover, but we can offer you some decent caches to add that extra bit of fun.

Series start point Capel le Ferne: The Valiant Sailor bus stop N51 05.829 E001 12.052 (Route 101/102) is close to the path entrance N51 05.811 E001 12.024 at the start of the walk.

Series end point Dover: N51 06.883 E001 18.321. The Mega Factory bus stop. (Route 61). The bus will take you to Dover Bus Station (via Aycliffe), where you can catch a regular 101 or 102 bus back to Capel le Ferne. Please check the local bus timetable before you set out. Especially during weekends and Bank Holidays. If you take the underpass nearby you can easily walk into Dover town from here.
